Again and again in the story the narrator reminds us God is in control
God works through Saul’s own family and directly on Saul to prevent him from killing David. First Saul commands his family and attendants to kill David. But Jonathan talks some sense into his father and even prompts Saul to take an oath before God that David will not be put to death. Saul soon breaks his oath by trying again to pin David to the wall with his spear. Again, David eludes him.
Next, it is David’s wife Michal who saves him. Saul sends men to kill David at his home. Michal hears of this, warns David, lowers him out a window to escape, and places a “dummy” in the bed to fool the would-be murderers. When confronted by Saul for her actions, she claims David threatened to kill her if she did not help him escape.
Finally God himself intervenes to save David. Davis had fled to Samuel and his band of prophets. Three times Saul send men to capture David. Each time the Spirit of God comes upon the men and they prophesy. Finally Saul goes himself and he too begins to ecstatically prophesy. God turns a murderer into a prophet!
