What blessings are all around us, that we haven’t discovered yet?
In winter of 2010, the icicles were still hanging from the eaves, but the thaw had begun and I was watching the steady drip, drip of melting ice. It would be gone in a couple of days, but until then we have a thick blanket of peaceful white snow. This much snow is a little unusual here in Oklahoma and it was the second time that winter. The trees were covered with a layer of ice that looked like crystal. I knew soon the sun will break through and when it does the trees would dance in the wind and sparkle like diamonds. I hoped the sun would come out that day.
Just a couple of days before, I was sitting in my bed, blankets piled around me and curtains thrown wide open. This is the room that happened by accident. We had no intention of building an upstairs on this house, but that’s a whole different story. Long story short, when we were getting estimates for a new roof, Mark climbed up and said “Pam you’ve got to see this view!” Twelve months later, we changed the whole plan and now have a bedroom with magnificent view that we didn’t even know existed! It makes me wonder what other blessings are all around us, but that we haven’t discovered yet?
It doesn’t always happen, but this is how I want to start every day….admiring creation in the presence of the Creator. A few days before this snowfall, the grass was yellow and the leaves were brown…it was still a beautiful morning! I was singing “Create in me a new heart, o God, and renew a right spirit in me.” The words and melody where coming out of my mouth, but my heart felt dry like the leaves and the grass. As I continued to sing I said to the Lord, ” I can’t feel Your presence. Where are you, Lord?” Immediately, I turned to a window beside me to look at our Father’s world hoping that the sight of nature would draw me unto the Lord. As I turned my head to look, not 30 foot from the window was a bald eagle! My heart leapt within me!
We see bald eagles here fairly regularly, but not so often that it’s ordinary if that’s even possible. This eagle was soaring right at eye level! I jumped off of the bed and headed for the window to get a better view. The eagle headed out over the pond and then banked right back towards the house. I ran to another window so not to lose him. He was headed right for me! In flight his proud, white head and neck stretched out in front of him. He was massive! He appeared to have a 5-6′ wing span. He was graceful, yet powerful; awesome and fearless. With just a couple of beats of his wings he propelled himself with great speed as he sliced through the air. As he went over the house, I ran to the window facing the front yard and watched him circle. I yelled down the stairs “Mark come up here. Quick!” With that I headed for the next window where Mark joined me.
There we stood in the window together, watching this beautiful bird soar and, now this is going to be hard to believe. Are you ready? As we watched and wished out loud that we had our camera, a second bald eagle appeared with the first! We watched in unbelief as they as they hung effortlessly in the sky. They soared together, two white heads and two white tails glinting every time the sun hit them. We were blown away!
After the eagles headed back towards the river, we talked about the beauty and surprise of it all. As we settled down, Mark headed down stairs and I crawled back into bed to wrap-up my Bible study. As I thanked the Lord for the blessing He had just delivered, I asked Him “Father what would want me to know or learn today?” I stuck my finger into my Bible and my eyes fell on this scripture.
Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said “This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel; You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. Now if you obey Me fully and keep My covenant, then out of all nations you will be My treasured possession. Although, the whole earth is Mine, you will be for Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” Exodus 19:3-6
God is so good to us. In a split second, He changed everything! My dry heart felt absent from God, but He confirmed that He heard the cry of my heart. I’m blown away that He loves me so much that He brought me to Himself on eagles wings! How our Father loves us and desires to show us His love!

Thank you, Pam, for this story of moving from feeling distant from God to feeling the loving and powerful presence of God in stunning creation, and how God carries us on Eagles wings as with Israel. This is a beautiful connection to scripture and how God loves us. Thank you for the reminder to look for signs of God’s love yet undiscovered. We’re happy to have you writing for The Journey blog!
