How Big Is God’s Family Tree? – Romans 11
Reading: Deuteronomy 9-14; Psalms 31-34
What did you like and/or dislike about the Scripture you read this week and/or last week’s sermon? What stood out to you in a new way?
Are you holding back love from others? Who? Why?
Paul shows two big things in Romans 9-11:
-
God faithfully keeps covenant promise to Israel.
-
The promise is fulfilled in Jesus the Messiah and available for the nations.
Is God finished with Israel? (Rom 11:12, 15)
Why does Paul want to make Jews jealous? (Rom 11:11,14)
Why were branches broken off? (Rom 11:17, 20)
How are branches grafted in? (Rom 11:20a)
Can God graft in what he has broken off? (Rom 11:23)
IRREVOCABLE LOVE OF GOD
-
Stand in awe. (Rom 11:20)
-
Note the kindness and severity of God. (Rom 11:22)
-
Gentiles (Friends, Romans, Americans!) don’t get cocky and think you are the “replacements” for Israel.
-
Israel revel in the mystery that through your stumbling, Gentiles are saved. (Rom 11:24-26)
-
Are God’s gifts and calling (promises, love, covenant) irrevocable? (Rom 11:29 NRSV)
MYSTERY OF THE GOSPEL
“Mistery is not what we try when we can’t figure everything out. Mystery is inherent in God’s nature and how God works. Yes, in mystery we are not in position to control anything, predict outcomes, manage people, or pose as authorities.” –Eugene Peterson
Doxology (Rom 11:33-36)
If this ‘stumps’ you, it stumps Paul too? It’s a mystery and he stops and praises God!
God’s mercy is for all people who by faith in the Messiah will rise from death to life!
So did God harden the hearts of the Jews so that they would not follow Christ and in turn enabling the spread of the Gospel to the Gentiles?
