Preparing to read Matthew 10
Jesus does four big things in this story.
- He calls out ordinary men.
- To these ordinary men he gives authority to drive out demons and heal diseases and illness.
- He instructs them on their mission.
- He sends them out.
Here we learn the names of the twelve disciples or apostles who followed Jesus, and we get to listen in the huddle as Jesus goes over their mission playbook.
Prayer
First, Lord, when I read in this story about your disciples not taking money, honestly that’s one of the hardest parts of this. I don’t feel I have faith in your provision like that to step out on faith that “the worker is worth his keep.” Please increase my faith in you and decrease my faith in money. Second, would you increase my boldness where you are urging me to share the good news of the Messiah Jesus Christ who died for me? Increase my faith!
Action Step
Often we only need to take the next step into mission. If you’ve never gone on a short-term mission trip, what is your first step toward going on a trip with a specific purpose to share good news and serve others? You may be more likely to go on a long-term mission if you go on a short-term mission trip first.
