Living and active

I woke with these words from the Hebrew writer on my mind:

“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.* Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.–Hebrews 4:12-13

Does it speak for itself? Only if we do allow it to speak into our lives. Most of us tend to make choices that leave out the word of God in our lives–I’m guilty of that on weekly basis . . . there are days when I don’t touch the word of God in any authentic way.

Lord, lay open my life to you, to the world around me. Your word, Christ, the Spirit, is living. Let me be a living word.

*There’s a rare mistake in my NIV here: no period, though in Greek there’s no punctuation to speak of anyway!

  1. Greg,
Do you use PC Bible Study? When I read your post, I checked my “preaching” Bible, it has the period, but PC Bible Study does not.

I wish the NIV had not put “God’s” sight there. “His” sight, referring to “word of God” really brings to life the idea of the word being alive and active. The word is there – alive, moving, seeing, judging. He sees us, but we don’t see him like we should and we make decisions, as you suggest, without his immediate impact.

    We should do better. Thanks.

  2. Greg, thanks for washing our feet by encouraging us to be in the Word. Like you, I know I need to go there more than I do at present. Isn’t it amazing how after all these years (don’t ask how many) we STILL discover new truths! I want to continue being a searcher and your blog post was a reminder to follow up on that goal.

    Love you bro!

  3. Thank you Greg for a timely reminder. I was just thinking moments ago while I finished our dishes how I allow time to pass without consulting His word which is a lamp unto my feet.
